It used to be that allotmenteers were mainly older members of our society.

Now, almost anyone of any age can be involved in allotments.

It is common for families to work together and children as young as 3 can take enjoyment, even if it is getting muddy.

Probably the best reason for taking an allotment is saving on the food bill.

It is well know that the average benefit is £1,300 from an allotment.

Today there are approximately 300,000 allotments in the UK, down from over 500,000 during the war. The decrease is due to high rents and councils reusing land for commercial purposes.

If the existing 300,000 allotments produced a minimum of 200 kilos per year, which is not unreasonable output, it would equate to 60 tonnes of fresh locally produced fruit and vegetable, mostly organically grown, equivalent to 2,000 forty foot containers not importing food and not travelling the roads.
